My Impulse blog!
Old purchases still available
Published on April 27, 2014 By GhostMatter In PC Gaming

Looks like Gamestop purchasing Impulse has amounted to nothing for Gamestop in the end. I got this email on April 24th:

Hello PC Downloads Customers!

We're writing to you today because there are big changes coming to GameStop's PC Gaming area. We've heard your feedback over the past year and in order to serve you better, we are simplifying the digital PC game purchasing and redemption process.

Starting April 24, 2014, when visiting ImpulseDriven.com, you'll be redirected to GameStop.com. In addition, the GameStop PC Downloads App will be simplified down to a pure download and game library manager. From that point on, it will no longer be a requirement for you to download the PC Downloads App when making new purchases. But don't worry! We're still holding onto all of those past purchases that you made prior to 4/24/14. So when you want to download and play any of those games where we supplied the game files instead of Steam, Origin, or any of our other great partners, the updated version of the PC Downloads App will be there to do just that.

One last thing: Be sure to stay tuned to GameStop.com/PCGames and your local GameStop stores in the coming days and weeks! We're going to continue remodeling our new home to better serve you, and that includes serving up some of the best deals that PC gaming has ever seen!

Thank you for your loyalty and all of your fantastic feedback!

Sincerely,

I can still access my previous purchases but for how long? I can't make any new purchases because I don't have a US address. They only give Steam, Origin and Uplay codes now. They could just've done that from the start, would've cost them much less.

It's funny how Gamefly moved to a download manager and Gamestop is moving away, based on "feedback".

Moving games to Steam/Origin/etc. would be nice but what about the games that aren't available there?

I'm talking about the games from the D&D Ultimate pack which from my knowledge are only available on GOG.

Bleh. Just tried running the gamestop app to see if I can get the archive function to work. It doesn't. And, while I (somehow?) have a registered Gamestop account, it doesn't acknowledge the purchases I made on the app before it fell down and went 'boom.' So my question becomes, if we can't archive the games we purchased on the gamestop app, what happens when Gamestop finally shuts it down completely? I'd -really- rather not have to buy the Sins Trilogy all over again (even though I already own Rebellion), not to mention my handful of other games. It's the principle of the thing.

Good ideea with the archiving but it seems now I can't even log into the app.

Servers are down.

on Oct 16, 2014

Try twice in a row. The auto login function apparently doesn't work anymore, and it always takes me a couple tries to sign into the gamestop app. For some (probably asinine) reason, the app account is completely different from the gamestop website account, so keep that in mind if you have both.

on Oct 17, 2014

I tried several times but it just says "Could not connect to servers".

I can't even access the site. Either http://www.gamestop.com/ or http://www.impulsedriven.com/

Last time this happened I had to get a newer version of the app but now I don't know where to download it from.

Edit:

I kind of found out what the problem is. I can't access their servers from my country (Romania). Using "Hola Better Internet" I can log into the site but the app still doesn't connect.

Does anyone know how to trick the app that I'm from the US? Proxy works for login but not for download.

on Oct 18, 2014

Hmm.. Unfortunately, I'm at a loss. If using a proxy doesn't completely work, then I strongly recommend getting in contact with someone from customer support. It specifically says on the bottom of this page here that any games purchased before April, 24, 2014 can only be downloaded via the Gamestop app... which is COMPLETELY-PANTS-ON-HEAD retarded. Having said that, they should be able to provide a solution for you being unable to access your purchased games thanks to server issues.

Same here, except I'm in Russia.
But their tech support doesn't reply to me anymore.

Because they no longer care about their reputation in countries with no GameStop shops I guess.

on Oct 19, 2014

Well, from what I can see on their site, the only support service they offer is by phone so maybe that's why they don't reply anymore.

Anyway, I may have found a solution.

Free VPN trials. This one seems to have a good speed: http://www.safervpn.com/ but the trial is active only for 24 hours so you either have to get everything in 24 hours or make several trial accounts (mail specific).

If I archive the games and unpack them later do I need the Gamestop App?

on Oct 19, 2014

I did call them, they told me that app support is via email only.
If you managed to install them, I suggest that you also zip and store the destination folder.

on Oct 19, 2014

Will they work on another computer or if I ever reinstall Windows?

I've got the D&D Ultimate Pack, so I think Baldur's Gate and the other Infinity Engine games might work, but I don't know about Neverwinter Nights 1 and 2.

on Oct 23, 2014

I'm... uncertain. The last time I  got the archive feature to work, it didn't work so well for me, but that was because my games were archived with a different version of Windows than the one I'm currently using, I -think- that as long as you don't, say, change from Windows 7 to Windows 8 (or whatever's available at the time) you shouldn't have a problem? But I suspect probably be better if you did a straight OS upgrade rather than a reinstall, if you're keen on keeping archives that you can use later.

on Oct 23, 2014

Couldn't I just archive the game folders?

Should there be an archive function within the app? Because I only found a "Restore archive" command.

on Oct 26, 2014

There used to be an archive function. But that's been taken out I think, because I can't find it anywhere in what's left of the app either.

on Oct 26, 2014

I wish they would create a downloader again, I would love to play Gal Civ 2 again.... oh well *sigh*

on Nov 07, 2014

I tried reinstalling the app and logging in again.

So I did, and then it asks me for the "one time password" to authorize my PC. Thing is, they don't send me anything. It gives me this error: "GameStop App - One-Time Password Error : An unknown server error has occurred. Please try again later."

So I can't even log in. I have some pre-GameStop purchases in there that I contacted Stardock support about, but I also have many post-GameStop purchases and it seems that may be lost?

Any idea how can I get the one-time password? Maybe it has something to do with me not being in the USA?
